THE NEW PLACE WORKSHOPS

Robin Johnson of The New Place had developed and delivered several skill enhancement workshops to improve interpersonal communications, raise confidence and inspire creativity. She has coached executives of Target Corporation and American Public Media as well as customized training students at Alexandria Technical College. Below are some of the workshops she’s developed:

Scared Speechless: How To Overcome The Fear Of Public Speaking© All too often even introductory public speaking courses assume a level of comfort with public address that simply doesn't exist with many. How about the rest of us? How about a public speaking class for those of us who hate to say our name, let alone make a whole speech?

Scared Speechless: How To Overcome The Fear Of Public Speaking© is a class specifically designed for those who want to start from Step One. Its non-threatening, fun and relaxed atmosphere promotes confidence and learning that will put you more at ease in speaking situations.

Well, this past weekend, I was in Milwaukee for my Weight Watchers leader training. You wouldn't believe how many times I had to get up and speak in front of our group....but I DID IT! Not saying I was great, but I wasn't horrible either. I was sweaty, but my voice wasn't shaky and I completed the tasks I needed to do. AND, the best part.....I passed. This weekend was pass/fail and I passed! Now, after four mentoring sessions, I will be a Weight Watchers leader and I will be on my way to a new career! Thanks again for all your tips and suggestions during the class. It was a great class.....although I wish it could have been longer. You are a fantastic teacher in this topic and anyone who is fortunate to have you should be grateful. -- Celeste Edenloff, Alexandria Technical College

Steve PetersonHi Robin... Just wanted to say thanks again for your "Scared Speechless" workshop. It helped a LOT! Since then I helped develop, coordinate and at times co-facilitate 72 hours of workshops. Since then I was also asked to co-facilitate discussions at a national conference in Albuquerque NM next March. There will be 2500-3000 people at the conference but 20-30 in the discussions. Small group but tough subject, race relations/ social justice/ equal rights. I'm looking forward to it even if I am "Scared Speechless". -- Steve Peterson, Alexandria Technical College

Allowing Yourself to be Creative: As part of MPR's Creativity Roundtable series, this workshop focused on getting in touch with your creative self, working through blocks that hinder creativity and emphasized creative confidence. [Taught for Minnesota Public Radio]

Maximizing Your Impact Utilizing actors' preparation and tips, executives were successfully taught to command attention in large-scale presentation situations as well as round-table discussions.
[Taught at Target Corporation]

"Very much appreciated the sessions! This was amazingly helpful!" -- Nate Swanstrom, Director of TTS Guest Facing Systems

The Dynamics of Small Group Communication: This specially commissioned workshop featured a "fishbowl exercise" in which the underwriting sales department focused on the relationships and interactions within their working group. Identification of roles and understanding of communication obstacles were emphasized.
[Taught for American Public Media]

Improve With Improv: A co-facilitated workshop taking staff members through basic improvisation games to enrich concentration, focus and creativity. [Taught for American Public Media]

Using Principles of Theatre for More Effective Communication: A commissioned workshop designed to enhance the dynamic presentations of MPR's network managers.
